Cooking in a Camper – and the Scent of Orange Cake

When people think about cooking in a camper van, they often picture canned ravioli, instant soup, or a quickly assembled sandwich. For us, it’s something else entirely. Even on the road, we want to eat fresh, delicious meals with joy – whether it’s on a rainy day in Normandy or parked at the roadside in the south of France.

Our camper kitchen is small but cleverly set up: two gas burners are usually enough, and we’ve treated ourselves to a single induction hob from Ikea. One of the best decisions we’ve made. On campsites with electricity, we use it daily – to boil water, sauté, or simply save on gas. The combination gives us flexibility. And if something’s missing, we get creative.

Despite the limited space, we don’t compromise on taste. In fact, cooking in the camper has slowed us down. We think more carefully about what we really need, reach for fresh ingredients more often, and take our time – for simple meals with soul.

And sometimes… it smells like cake.

Yes, cake is possible in a camper. With the Omnia oven – that ingenious little stovetop baking tin – we’ve tried plenty of recipes. Our favourite so far? A wonderfully moist orange cake. Simple, quick, and full of flavour.

Recipe

4 eggs

250 g sugar

200 ml oil

200 ml orange juice

zest of 1 organic orange (finely grated)

300 g flour

1 packet baking powder

Instructions

Beat the eggs with the sugar until fluffy – the lighter, the better.

Stir in the oil, orange juice, and grated zest.

Mix flour with baking powder and gradually fold it in.

Stir into a smooth batter.

Pour into the greased Omnia baking tin.

Bake on high flame for 5 minutes, then on low flame for about 45 minutes – keeping the lid closed.

Test with a wooden skewer; if it comes out clean, it’s done.

A little moment of luxury – perfect with tea, for guests, or just because.

Variation tip: Replace orange juice with milk, skip the zest, and add some vanilla and cocoa – and you’ll have a moist chocolate cake in no time. Or simply let your creativity run free; the Omnia is forgiving and often surprising. ;)

Conclusion: Cooking in a camper isn’t about going without. It’s an invitation to rethink – with less space but more mindfulness.
